Smoking

Hi bloggers!

We have a question for you. Have you ever been informed about smoking by a specialist? In our last lesson, we had the chance to have a skype call with Beth B., a scientist who is currently occupied with examining C.O.P.D. (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), a disease which is highly related to smoking. She not only informed us about the effects smoking can have on us, but she also fully analyzed them to us.

As Beth said, adolescents are at an age during which the brain is massively developing and getting addicted to smoking is incredibly easy. Due to this fact, teens at the age of 12-16 get frequently addicted to it, and it’s very hard for them to stop smoking.

Another thing we got informed about is the toxic ingredients of vape, and cigarettes, and how they can be perilous for the human body. Initially, cigarettes consist of many damaging substances, such as nicotine, tar, acetone, ammonia, carbon monoxide and arsenic (a lethal poison). On the other hand, vape, which seems to be safer than cigarettes, is not safe enough, as it includes nicotine and other flavorings. And here is an interesting fact to know. Most of the flavorings vape includes, have a unique characteristic; they are totally safe to eat, but extremely dangerous to inhale.

Finally, Beth talked to us about the way smoking can harshly impact our health. A shocking fact is that 8 million people die each year because of 1st hand smoking, while 1 million of them die due to 2nd hand smoking! The reasons of their death can be lung, mouth, or throat cancer, C.O.P.D., lung inflammation, mucus, emphysema, brain damage, stroke/heart attack situations, lung damage and near stroke situations, for both 1st and 2nd hand smokers.

However, there are also some good news. Even if smoking can have some permanent effects on our bodies, stopping it can eliminate many risks of death in months, years or even in a few days!

It was great for us to be informed about smoking, and a general advice for all is to quit smoking as soon as possible! After all, who in his/her right mind would ever inhale arsenic?
